On May 11, 2021, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) issued a warning to the public about a suspected fraud syndicate operating in Nairobi's Central Business District.

The DCI received numerous complaints from members of the public who claimed to have fallen victim to the syndicate.

According to the DCI, the well-organized syndicate consists of young men and women who pose as sales agents of the suspects.

DCI appealed to members of the public who may have been hoodwinked by the fraudsters to report to the DCI headquarters Serious Crime Unit.

They vowed that necessary police action would be taken following the reports.

Earlier in December 2020, a man was lured into participating in a 'scratch-to-win' deal in Nairobi, where he was promised new smartphones and tablets.

However, he was required to part with Ksh36,000 for each item, only to find cheap knock-off electronics worth Ksh 4,000 in total.
