Kenya's Michael Olunga Ends Qatar Season on a High

Kenyan striker Michael Olunga scored his 19th goal of the half-season with Al Duhail, but the team lost to Al Rayyan in the Amir Cup semi-final, ending their 2020/21 season without a trophy.

On January 12, Olunga joined Al Duhail from Kashiwa Reysol, where he had guided the team to a seventh-place finish and won the Golden Boot and Player of the Year awards with 28 goals.

Despite a strong start, Al Duhail suffered a quarter-final exit in the Club World Cup, losing 1-0 to Al Ahly from Egypt on February 4.

They also lost to Al Sadd in the Qatar Cup final on February 26 and finished second in the Qatar Stars League, 13 points behind Al Sadd.

However, Olunga's last hope of silverware in his first season in Qatar ended when Al Duhail crashed out of the Amir Cup at the expense of Al Rayyan.

"I am disappointed with this bad result against Al Rayyan," said Coach Sabri Lamouchi. "Although we succeeded in creating many opportunities, Al Rayyan succeeded in scoring first.... Al Rayyan succeeded in providing a good match in front of us today, but the team could have come back if we had improved on our focus and took advantage of the opportunities created."
