Kenya High School Shines in 2020 KCSE Rankings

The 2020 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examination saw Kenya High School emerge as the top-performing school, with six candidates making it to the top 15 list.

Among the top performers was Sharon Chepng'eno, who scored 87.173 points and emerged as the top girl in the country. The school's principal, Flora Mulatya, attributed their success to hard work and the support of teachers, non-teaching staff, and parents.

"I thank God for this. We always put God first but also work very hard," Mulatya said.

The 2020 KCSE examination was the first to be administered under the COVID-19 pandemic, and it posed significant challenges to students and schools. Despite these challenges, the number of candidates who qualified for university admission increased compared to the previous year.

Education Secretary George Magoha released the results at the Kenya National Examinations Council (Knec) headquarters in Nairobi, where he also announced that 893 candidates scored a mean grade of A, compared to 627 in the 2019 examinations.

Magoha also noted that the number of candidates who sat the examination from hospital maternity wards increased significantly, with 652 candidates sitting their exams while pregnant. He attributed this to the high number of girls who got pregnant during the pandemic.

"The number of candidates sitting Exams (while pregnant) was the highest in history. We must get to the root cause of the problem," Magoha said.

He also warned that more results might be recalled after the conclusion of ongoing forensic investigations into examination irregularities.

The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) announced that tutors involved in examination cheating will be removed from the teachers' register if found guilty.
