Manchester United has secured the services of Edinson Cavani for another year, with the striker signing a one-year contract extension.

The deal, which includes an option for an additional year, was made possible by a mutual agreement between Cavani and the club.

Earlier this year, Cavani's father, Luis, claimed that his son wanted to leave Manchester United, citing frustration with Cavani's unavailability during a period where he started only once in 10 games.

However, Cavani has since found his form, scoring eight goals in his last seven appearances, and has decided to stay at the club for a second season.

"Over the season, I have developed a great affection for the club and everything that it represents," Cavani said.

"I feel a deep bond with my team-mates and the staff who work behind the scenes here. They give me extra motivation every day and I know that, together, we can achieve special things," he added.

Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer praised Cavani's impact on the team, saying: "He has been everything I thought he would be and more. He has a winning mentality and an unequivocal attitude to everything he does."

The extension allows Manchester United to effectively park plans to sign a long-term number nine until the 2022 summer transfer window, with Erling Haaland's €75million clause at Borussia Dortmund set to become active next year.
