KNEC Disowns Ranking of Top KCSE Schools ¶
On May 10, 2021, the Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) released the KCSE 2020 results, but a list ranking top schools that circulated widely on social media was later disowned by the examination body.
According to KNEC, the list was false and advised the public to ignore it, stating that the council did not commission the ranking.
"We wish to advise the public to ignore lists circulating in social media purported to be the genuine ranking of KCSE Examination results. The Council has not ranked schools in the results released. All lists are therefore fake," KNEC noted.
Education CS George Magoha had announced that the class of 2020 had improved as compared to the class of 2019, with 893 students scoring A plain as compared to 627 candidates in 2019.
Magoha also noted that all 747,171 students would be enrolled to higher education, tertiary institutions through KUPPS.
However, the ranking of schools in the KCSE 2020 results has been a subject of controversy, with some arguing that it created fierce competition among students and schools, leading to departure from teaching to preparation for passing examinations and cheating.
"In their effort to obtain high grades, students and sometimes teachers resort to various forms of cheating designed to give a candidate unfair advantage over others," an education report revealed.
The Ministry of Education observed that ranking individual students and schools created fierce competition, which sometimes led to departure from teaching to preparation for passing examinations and cheating.
"This takes many forms including copying from other students during examinations, collusion between students and supervisors, use of material smuggled into the examination rooms and purchasing of examination papers," an education report revealed.
