On May 11, 2021, hundreds of homeless families in Kinango Sub-county, Kwale County, were left reeling after their homes were demolished by a private developer.

The families, who are now living in the cold, claim that the developer colluded with top government officials to grab their ancestral land.

Resident Ramadhan Lewa Kalume dismissed claims that they had entered into a consent with the company associated with the private developer, stating, "I wish to insist that we were never consulted in the sale of the land to the private developer."

The demolition exercise was allegedly carried out by officers from the General Service Unit (GSU), not regular police.

Single mother Salama Kenga and 24-year-old mother Mwanahamisi Ramadhan, who lost her home and is now surviving on handouts, appealed for government intervention.
