Heavy rainfall has been affecting different areas across Kenya over the weekend, leading to flooding and loss of livestock in some regions.
According to the Kenya Meteorological Department, the heavy rainfall could increase in intensity to over 30 millimeters in 24 hours.
Dr. David Gikungu, Deputy Director of Meteorological Services, stated that the most affected areas include highlands west of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria basin, Highlands East of the Rift Valley including Nairobi county, the North Western region of Turkana County, and the South Eastern Lowlands including Kajiado county.
Dr. Gikungu urged the public to be cautious, as high water levels in rivers could result in flooding, and soils soaked with water in hilly areas could trigger mudslides.
Residents in these areas are advised to be on the lookout for any eventuality.
Additionally, the Kilifi County Government Disaster Management Unit, in conjunction with the Kenya Red Cross Society, has urged area residents living in low-lying areas along River Sabaki to be alert over the possibility of flash floods.
Heavy rainfall has been forecast in the River Sabaki catchment areas, and floods may occur in low-lying areas that may not be receiving rainfall.
