On May 10, 2021, a Nairobi Court cancelled the initial bond terms for Alex Olaba, a former Kenya Sevens rugby player, after he was charged with conspiring to kill a key witness in the gang-rape case.
Magistrate Zainab Abdul ruled that witness interference by an accused person cannot be taken lightly, leading to the cancellation of Olaba's bail.
Olaba was initially denied gang-rape charges alongside his co-accused Frank Wanyama, but the court's decision to cancel his bail has left him behind bars until the case is heard and determined.
Prosecutor Evelyne Onunga had asked the court to cancel Olaba's bail, citing that he had committed an offence while out on bail, putting the life of the key witness in danger.
Olaba also faced a second charge of conspiring to defeat justice.
