Published on May 10, 2021, a report by the Ministry of Education revealed that 652 female candidates in Kenya sat their Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams in hospitals after giving birth.
The counties with the highest number of candidates who sat their exams in hospitals after delivery included Bungoma (43), Meru (38), Nakuru (36), Kisii (36), and Nandi (31).
Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha attributed the increase in numbers to the long school closure due to COVID-19, which may have driven learners into temptations at a time when households were facing enormous challenges.
Magoha emphasized the need for a multi-sectoral approach to address the root cause of teenage pregnancies and urged parents and guardians to offer support to the girl child.
He also called for greater support and protection for learners who sat the 2020 KCPE Examination and are expected to remain at home until July 26, 2021, when they will join Form One.
