On May 10, 2021, Tana River County Government initiated a 22-day livestock vaccination and treatment campaign, targeting 70% of its livestock population.
The campaign, which will be carried out in three sub-counties, aims to protect animals against contagious diseases such as Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), Contagious Caprine Pleuropneumonia (CCPP), Peste des Petits Ruminants (PPR), and Newcastle Disease.
According to Dr. Paul Mwamburi, the County Director of Veterinary Services, the campaign will administer vaccines to cows, goats, and chickens, with a focus on areas with large herds of livestock.
Dr. Mwamburi noted that Newcastle Disease has affected many poultry farmers in Tana River, and the campaign will provide 300,000 doses of vaccine to cater for all chickens free of charge.
The County Director also highlighted the risk of Rift Valley Fever (RVF) in the area and announced plans for a second vaccination campaign to administer vaccines against RVF.
Trypanosomiasis disease, mainly transmitted by tsetse flies, has also been a challenge to farmers in the Tana Delta Sub County, although there is no vaccine available for this disease.
