At least 28 people have lost their lives in a tragic boat mishap in Niger State, north central Nigeria.

The incident occurred on Saturday, May 8, 2021, when a boat carrying approximately 100 people capsized at around 6pm.

The passengers were returning from a local market in Zumba, in Shiroro Local Government Area of the state.

Local divers have been engaged in search and rescue operations since the accident occurred and are still searching for the missing passengers.

According to Mr Adamu Ahmed, the Sarkin Kasuwan (Head of the Market) in Zumba, 28 bodies have been recovered in the search and rescue operation.

He attributed the slow pace of the search to the lack of logistical support.

Mr Ahmed also revealed that among the victims were some returnees who had earlier fled their homes with their children due to bandit attacks.
