Published on May 10, 2021, a report by a local daily exposed the alarming state of boiled eggs sold by hawkers in Nairobi's streets. The eggs, sourced from unverified outlets and prepared in unsanitary conditions, pose a significant health risk to consumers.

According to the report, eggs sampled from various locations, including Tom Mboya street, River Road, and Muthurwa, failed to pass the basic safety test. The eggs contained E. Colli bacteria, which has been linked to various ailments in human beings.

Furthermore, revelations from those working in the sector revealed that hawkers were boiling eggs using car tyres as a cheaper fuel source. The eggs were also being prepared using water drawn from the Nairobi River, which is notorious for its poor water quality.

As a result, health experts are advising the public to exercise caution when consuming boiled eggs sold by hawkers. It is recommended that consumers boil their own eggs at home to ensure their safety.
