On May 10, 2021, Kakamega County Governor Wycliffe Oparanya announced plans to allocate Sh25 million to support cooperative societies in the county.
The funds will be used to strengthen the cooperatives, which have been performing poorly, with a focus on improving governance structures and record-keeping.
Of the Sh25 million, Sh18 million will be allocated as grants to 40 cooperative societies across the 12 sub-counties in the county.
Additionally, Sh5 million will be used for capacity building to help the cooperatives improve their governance structures and record-keeping.
According to Governor Oparanya, the cooperatives in the county have been performing poorly, and he has prioritized streamlining the cooperatives movement to improve living standards.
He regretted that the cooperatives have not been given adequate support by the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives, which he believes has contributed to their poor performance.
Chief Officer Jeremiah Namunyu noted that the county has 316 cooperative societies, with half of them being dormant.
He explained that the county has an elaborate plan to revitalize the dormant cooperatives by providing financial support and capacity building support.
