Published on May 10, 2021, a suicide bomber blew himself up at a police station in Mogadishu's Waberi district, killing at least six people, including two senior police officers.
According to police and medical sources, the attack occurred on Sunday evening, leaving six others wounded.
Police spokesman Sadik Aden Ali confirmed that Ahmed Bashane, Waberi district police commander, and Abdi Basid, deputy commander of Waliyow Adde police division, were among those who died in the attack.
"We can confirm that the suicide bomb attack killed six people including two senior police officers, three soldiers and a neighbour and injured six others this evening so far," Ali said.
Independent sources warned that the death toll could rise due to the blast's severity and the presence of many civilians in the area at the time of the attack.
Witnesses described the blast as huge, causing panic among residents.
The attack took place amid tight security in Mogadishu and its environs, with additional checkpoints erected to ensure the safety of residents observing the holy month of Ramadan.
No group has claimed responsibility for the attack yet.
