May 10, 2021, marked a pivotal day in La Liga's title race as Real Madrid drew 2-2 with Sevilla in a match filled with VAR drama. The result left Atletico Madrid atop the standings with three games to go, two points ahead of Real Madrid and Barcelona.
Real Madrid's Karim Benzema scored in the first half, but the goal was ruled out due to a marginal offside call. Brazilian midfielder Fernando then put Sevilla ahead, only for Real Madrid to level through Marco Asensio in the 67th minute.
However, the game took a stunning turn when Real Madrid was awarded a penalty after Benzema was fouled by goalkeeper Bono. Yet, a VAR review led to the referee penalizing Real defender Eder Militao for an earlier handball, awarding a spot kick to Sevilla instead.
Former Barcelona midfielder Ivan Rakitic converted the penalty to restore Sevilla's lead in the 77th minute. But Real Madrid refused to give up, and Toni Kroos's shot was diverted into the net by Diego Carlos in the third minute of added time, securing a dramatic draw.
The result leaves Real Madrid's title hopes hanging in the balance, with the team now two points behind Atletico Madrid with three games remaining.
