On May 9, 2021, a viral video surfaced on social media, showing a female police officer expressing her frustrations about being subjected to unfair treatment and sexual harassment.
The officer, attached to the Traffic Department in Mombasa County, had previously complained against a merchant, leading to an inquiry by DCI Kenya officers and a departmental action.
Inspector-General of Police Hilary Mutyambai confirmed the investigation on his Twitter page, stating that he had directed the Gender and Children Directorate to independently investigate the matter and provide a report within 7 days.
According to the viral video, the officer had written several resignation letters to her bosses without success, citing that she was having it rough and could succeed elsewhere as a civilian.
She expressed her willingness to resign even without pay, as long as the IG accepted her resignation.
These developments come in the wake of Interior CS Fred Matiang'i's directives, issued on April 30, 2021, during the opening of the cadets' officer programme at the National Police College in Kiganjo, Nyeri County.
CS Matiang'i stated that police officers would not be allowed to marry each other or have romantic relationships with other officers, with one of the partners having to leave.
