Published on May 9, 2021, Arsenal's Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has expressed his disappointment and apology to fans after a difficult season.
The team's exit from the Europa League, following a goalless draw against Villarreal at the Emirates, marked the end of their last chance to salvage their inconsistent domestic campaign.
Aubameyang, who twice hit the woodwork in the match, acknowledged the team's struggles to find their rhythm and create problems for Villarreal.
"We struggled to find our rhythm in the first half and didn’t give Villarreal enough problems," he wrote in the Gunners' official matchday programme.
He also reflected on the team's missed chances, including a volley and a header that hit the post, and expressed his disappointment at not being able to provide any success on the pitch.
"I thought we started the second half with more energy and put them under pressure, but we just couldn’t maintain that drive and ultimately, we just didn’t find a way through Villarreal," Aubameyang said.
He concluded by apologizing to the fans for not being able to give them something positive this season, saying, "It’s been such a difficult season for fans and we desperately wanted to give you something positive this season – I’m just so sorry we couldn’t do it for you."
