On May 9, 2021, the Nyandarua County Assembly witnessed a dramatic turn of events as Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) voted to impeach their Speaker, Ndegwa Wahome, for the third time in less than six months.
The impeachment motion, moved by Leader of Majority Edinald King'ori and seconded by Wanjohi ward Rep Isaac Kung'u, was supported by 31 MCAs while six opposed it, with one abstention.
The MCAs accused Speaker Wahome of various misdeeds, including abuse of office, militarizing the assembly, disregard for the law, victimizing assembly members and staff, impunity, corruption, poor leadership, nepotism, and unlawful recruitment of staff.
Leader of Majority King'ori also accused Speaker Wahome of undermining the leadership of Governor Francis Kimemia and favoritism in assembly functions outside the county.
Speaker Wahome, who has maintained that he is still the Speaker, has blamed Governor Kimemia for being behind the bid to remove him from office, claiming his woes are linked to his stand on corruption and criticism of Governor Kimemia's style of leadership.
