On a crucial day in the Premier League, Liverpool kept their top-four hopes alive with a 2-0 win against Southampton at Anfield on Saturday, May 9, 2021.

The victory, which was Liverpool's first in four games, moved them above Tottenham into sixth place and left them six points behind fourth-placed Leicester with a game in hand in the race to qualify for next season's Champions League.

Mane scored his 14th goal of the season in the 31st minute, heading home from close range after a cross from Mohamed Salah, and Thiago sealed the win in stoppage time with a rifled shot from 18 yards.

Southampton, who have now lost 13 of their 17 league games since beating Liverpool in January, were unable to capitalize on their few chances, with Alisson Becker making several crucial saves to keep the visitors at bay.

Despite the win, Liverpool still face a difficult task in their bid to finish in the top four, with Leicester and fifth-placed West Ham likely to be their main rivals for the final Champions League spot.

However, with a game in hand and a strong finish to the season, Liverpool will be hoping to salvage a troubled campaign and secure a top-four place.
