On May 7, police in Gem, Siaya County questioned a male nurse over allegations of defiling a 17-year-old Form Two student. The nurse, based at a health dispensary in Gem sub-county, was released due to insufficient evidence.
According to police, the nurse allegedly committed the offence on May 2. However, other sources indicated that he was having an affair with the minor.
Police boss Charles Chacha stated that they have launched investigations and are trying to piece together the evidence to build a case against the nurse. The nurse denied knowledge of the girl, claiming he was dating an older lady different from the one in question.
Chacha explained that members of the public found the nurse with the minor in his vehicle, which was parked near a bush. He added that the investigations may have dragged due to the late reporting of the incident, which initially went to the area chief.
Chacha also highlighted the issue of parents opting for out-of-court settlements with offenders, making it difficult for victims to get justice. He emphasized that the police will ensure the minor gets justice, despite the lack of evidence at the moment.
