Uhuru, Raila Lead Kenyans in Mourning Former Nairobi Speaker Alex Ole Magelo

Former Nairobi County Speaker Alex Ole Magelo, a respected leader and sports enthusiast, passed away on the night of Friday, May 7, 2021, at a Nairobi hospital. His death has sent shockwaves across the country, with leaders from various political parties and organizations sending their condolences to his family.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was among the first to send a message of condolence to Magelo's family, describing him as an outstanding leader who worked hard to make Kenya a better country for all. The President noted that Magelo's commitment to duty and service to fellow Kenyans saw him being appointed as a member of the Kenya Leather Development Council last year.

“I have known the late Ole Magelo for a long time and from my interactions with him, I came to appreciate his commitment and desire to make life better for others,” President Kenyatta eulogised. “He was a gentleman and a sports enthusiast who mentored very many young people through football to become great men and women in our country. Many remember Ole Magelo for the good work he did as Chairman of Kenyan football giants AFC Leopards,” he added.

Opposition leader Raila Odinga also conveyed his condolence message, describing Magelo as a strong and fearless leader who stood up for the Maa community without apologies. Raila eulogised the late Speaker as a great football enthusiast and official, saying, “Kenya has lost a patriot. I have lost a steadfast and reliable friend. May God comfort Magelo’s family and the Maa nation,”

Other leaders who sent their condolences include ANC boss Musalia Mudavadi, Governor Joseph Ole Lenku, Nairobi County Woman Representative Esther Passaris, and Senator Ledama Ole Kina. Tusker, Wazito, and Sofapaka football clubs also sent their messages of condolence to Magelo's family.
