On May 7, 2021, Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive, Nancy Macharia announced the promotion of 16,152 teachers as part of the Sh54 billion Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The promotions were conducted after interviews held in December 2020, and are part of the final phase of the CBA that has been implemented since July 1, 2017.
According to Dr. Macharia, the promoted teachers include 1,341 Deputy Principals I, 1,096 Deputy Principals II, 39 Senior Lecturers I, 1,590 Deputy Principal III, 209 Curriculum Support Officers, 2,111 headteachers, and 6,680 Senior Master IV.
Additionally, 1,756 positions of Deputy Headteacher II, 45 Senior lecturers, and 350 Senior Master IV under job group C4 have also been filled.
Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (Kuppet) Secretary General, Akello Misori welcomed the promotion, stating that some teachers have stagnated in the same job groups for more than 10 years.
However, it remains unclear if teachers from the Kenya National Union of Teachers (Knut) benefited from the promotions.
