On May 7, 2021, police in Nyando, Kisumu County, arrested three individuals suspected of stealing over 17,000 mosquito nets meant for free distribution to families in the area to curb the spread of malaria.

The stolen nets were meant for distribution at Nyang'ande and Rabuor hospitals, with 181 bales missing from the former and 160 from the latter, each containing 50 nets.

Those arrested include Theresa Anyango Otieno, acting officer in charge at Rabuor sub-county hospital, Cynthia Akinyi, acting officer in charge of net distribution at Nyang'ande area, and David Ouma, officer in charge at Nyang'ande hospital.

According to the police report, the missing mosquito net bales were valued at approximately Ksh. 6,820,000, with each bale containing 50 nets and selling for Ksh. 300.

The suspects have been placed in custody as investigations continue.
