Published on May 7, 2021, a County inspectorate Deputy Director in charge of operations, Ibrahim Basafar, led an operation in Mombasa that resulted in the arrest of a Tanzanian woman.
The woman, 23 years old, was caught with children she had 'rented' from Kenyan parents, and was making up to KSh 20,000 per day by posing as a beggar.
According to Basafar, the woman would pay the mothers of the children KSh 3,000 per day, and then use the children to beg for money in Mombasa.
Basafar warned parents against renting their children and urged well-wishers to spend money on genuine and urgent cases.
The Tanzanian woman was charged with two accounts of obtaining money by false pretense and another of being in the country illegally.
She pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 1 year in prison or a fine of KSh 50,000, and was also given repatriation orders after fulfilling the first judgement.
