On May 6, 2021, a shocking discovery was made at the Rabuor and Nyang'ande Sub-County Hospitals in Kisumu, where 17,050 mosquito nets donated by the National Government had gone missing.

The nets, valued at Sh6.8 million, were part of an initiative by Governor Anyang' Nyong'o's administration to protect 1.2 million residents against malaria.

Police in Kisumu arrested three senior health officers in connection with the alleged theft, with investigations ongoing to track down three more suspects believed to have been involved.

According to Kisumu County Police Commander Samuel Anampiu, the missing nets were valued at Sh6.8 million and consisted of 341 bales, with each bale containing 50 mosquito nets.

The Kisumu County Government had received the nets from the National Government with support from the Global Fund, as part of efforts to combat malaria in the region.

As of the time of publishing, the stolen nets had not been recovered.
