On May 7, 2021, the Kenya Rugby Union made the decision to recall the national women's sevens team from their solidarity camp in Tunisia.

The team was scheduled to participate in the second round of the tri-nation tournament, a crucial preparation for the Tokyo Olympics.

However, the Union cited 'state COVID-19 mitigation protocols' as the reason for the recall, stating that the decision was made after consultation with Rugby Africa, the Kenya Ministry of Sports, Culture and Heritage, and the Tunisian Rugby Federation.

According to a source, the team decided to return home early to avoid possible COVID-19 infections within the team.

The Kenya Lionesses had played the first round of the tournament the previous weekend, winning all their matches except for one slim loss against Madagascar.
