On May 6, 2021, the Ministry of Health announced the detection of five cases of the Indian Covid-19 variant in Kisumu County, sparking concerns among residents and traders.
As a precautionary measure, a section of Kisumu residents are now demanding that the government conduct mass Covid-19 tests to help control the spread of the deadly variant.
James Onyango, a resident, emphasized the need for mass testing and quarantining those who interacted with the infected individuals, stating, "Since this virus is here with us, let the government conduct mass testing and ensuring those who interacted with the five are quarantined. With that we are sure the action will tame the spread of this new variant hence save the lives of our people."
Residents are also urging the general public to be cautious and follow the Ministry of Health guidelines on Covid-19, with Alphonce Obongo advising, "Let's not fear but what am pleading with the general public to do is. Lets always put on our masks properly, wash our hand regularly and more so lets adhere to all Ministry of health guidelines."
