On May 5, 2021, Evans Karani, a 38-year-old Kiambu-based businessman, appeared before Justice Mary Kasango in a virtual session at the Kiambu Law Courts.

He had earlier confessed to killing Catherine Nyokabi on April 13, but now denied involvement in her murder, pleading not guilty to a murder charge.

Justice Kasango warned Karani that he would be sentenced to death if he pleads guilty to murder, and ordered him to remain in custody at the Nairobi Remand Prison until June 2, 2021, when a ruling on his bail will be made.

Karani's lawyer, M. Njehu, requested the court to grant his client reasonable bail terms and furnish him with witness statements and documentary evidence that the State wishes to rely on in the case.
