A fatal car accident occurred on the Southern Bypass in Nairobi on the night of May 5, 2021. A middle-aged man died after his vehicle rammed a lorry on the rear side.
According to the police, the driver of the BMW X5 was speeding when the vehicle smashed into the lorry, crushing the driver's compartment into small pieces which stuck under the underride guard of the commercial truck.
Lang'ata OCPD Benjamin Mwanthi refuted earlier claims that the BMW driver had ploughed into a stalled lorry, stating that the driver was speeding on the fast lane when he crashed into the rear part of the loaded lorry.
The driver died at the scene, and his body was taken to City Mortuary. The mangled wreckage of the BMW was towed to Lang'ata Police Station.
Some social media users suggested that poor lighting on the Southern Bypass contributed to the accident, but a senior police officer clarified that the lighting system on a section of the highway is controlled to ensure aircraft taking off from the nearby Wilson Airport are not misdirected.
