On May 4, 2021, the County Government of Mombasa launched a vaccination exercise targeting 3,000 frontline workers in the tourism and hospitality sector.
At least 400 hoteliers, including hotel keepers, tour operators, bar and restaurant owners, received the first dose of the AstraZeneca vaccine at the Makadara Grounds in Mombasa.
Stakeholders have welcomed the move, saying it will safeguard the workers who interact with thousands of domestic and international tourists flocking the county.
The County Government of Mombasa has also taken other measures to boost the tourism sector, including slashing licensing fees by more than 50% in the last one year.
Chief Officer Asha Abdullahi of the Tourism Department said the county is intensifying marketing campaigns through sister city innovative programs to attract more tourists into the county through direct flights.
Players in the industry have been challenged to diversify their products and services to remain afloat.
With the lifting of cessation of movement in five counties, including the capital Nairobi, Mombasa County expects an increased number of visitors following the resumption of flights and Standard Gauge Railway passenger services.
