On Saturday, May 1st, 2021, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) launched a major crackdown on illicit liquor in Nairobi, resulting in the seizure of several litres of counterfeit alcoholic beverages.
Simultaneous operations were conducted in various parts of the city, including Kariobangi, Ruai, Kiserian, Dandora, Pipeline, Kasarani, and Kenyatta market, as well as in the western and central regions of Kenya.
According to KRA, the operation was carried out after receiving information from the public about the presence of counterfeit excise stamps in the market of excisable goods.
Illicit trade has serious implications for all stakeholders, from manufacturers who operate within the law to unsuspecting consumers who may end up consuming potentially hazardous products. It also denies the government its due revenue.
During the crackdown, KRA officers seized various brands of illicit liquor with an estimated market value of KShs. 1,430,900 and a tax value of KShs.657,343.
