On May 4, 2021, the Tana River County Assembly made history by voting to impeach their speaker, Michael Justin Nkaduda, over allegations of incompetence and gross misconduct.
The impeachment motion, which was tabled by a seven-member ad hoc committee, was approved by 20 out of 23 members, surpassing the required threshold of 18 votes.
The committee, chaired by Ismail Bodha Kodobo, was formed to investigate the allegations against the speaker and tabled their report, which confirmed two grounds for impeachment: incompetence and gross misconduct.
The report highlighted the speaker's failure to convene County Assembly Public Service Board Meetings, which resulted in the collective responsibility of providing medical insurance, maintenance of vehicles, and promotion of staff being unfulfilled.
The ousted speaker was also accused of engaging in a fist fight with minority leader Hon. Abdi Garmaso after he visited his office to inquire about the status of the medical insurance cover.
The Tana River County Assembly has adjourned for one month, and the ousted speaker has filed a case at the Malindi Laws Court against Tana River Deputy speaker and clerk.
