On April 14, 2021, Evans Karani, a 38-year-old man, allegedly killed his lover Catherine Nyokabi, 25, in Juja, Kiambu County. A postmortem revealed Nyokabi died of blunt force trauma.

After being arrested at his home in Githurai Kimbo on April 15, Karani allegedly confessed to killing Nyokabi, citing her decision to leave him for another man.

On May 4, Karani failed to take plea at the Kiambu Law Courts due to the absence of a legal representative. The court directed that he be charged with murder on May 5.

However, a mental test conducted at the Kiambu Level 5 Hospital revealed that Karani was fit to stand trial. The State has since promised to provide him with a lawyer to facilitate the trial.

Karani will remain in custody at the Juja Police Station pending his plea-taking. In a shocking turn of events, Karani told the court on April 19 that the Judiciary should not waste time on his case and instead jail him as quickly as possible.

On April 20, Nyokabi was buried at her parents' home in Kieni East, Nyeri County.
