May 4, 2021, marked a day of great concern for residents of Kiunyu area in Murang'a County, as the increased number of bodies being retrieved from River Mathioya has left them living in fear.
According to reports, 10 bodies have been retrieved from River Mathioya, River Thika, and River Mukangai in a span of six months. Five of the bodies were discovered in the two areas in the past two weeks alone.
Residents have pointed out poor lighting and a huge thicket as possible factors facilitating the dumping of bodies into the river.
One of the residents expressed their concern, stating, 'We have not identified three of the bodies or where they came from but the others were identified because they lived in this village. We are very worried about our security.'
Another resident added, 'This place is not safe to pass past 11pm. Even if your car broke down you're better off leaving it here.'
One of the missing four from Kitengela, Elijah Obuong, 35, was found in the river stashed in a sack.
