Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan is set to address the Kenyan Parliament on Wednesday, in a bid to bolster ties between the two nations after months of strained relations.
President Suluhu arrived in Kenya on Tuesday morning and is scheduled to hold bilateral talks with President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House, Nairobi.
The special joint sitting will be held in the National Assembly chambers on Wednesday afternoon, with the agenda for the day cancelled, including the consideration of the impeachment motion of Wajir Governor Mohammed Mohamud and the debate of the Constitutional Amendment Bill 2020.
"Accordingly, I notify all Senators that the special sittings of the Senate scheduled for Wednesday at 10.00 a.m. and 2.30 p.m., as set out in Gazette Notice No. 4196 of 2021, are cancelled," Speaker Kenneth Lusaka said.
The diplomatic spat between the two nations erupted in January 2021, when Kenya blocked Tanzanian truck drivers from entering the country, fearing they would spread the COVID-19 disease.
Tanzania responded by banning Kenya Airways from entering its airspace, a move that was seen as a reciprocal action after Kenya included Tanzania in a list of countries whose nationals would not be permitted to enter Kenya when commercial flights resumed on August 1.
