On Tuesday, Tanzania's President Samia Suluhu arrived in Kenya for a historic state visit, marking her first official trip to the country since assuming office.

President Suluhu's visit comes after a similar trip to Uganda, where she signed a landmark petroleum pipeline deal with President Yoweri Museveni on April 11.

During her visit to Uganda, President Suluhu inked a deal to construct a 1,445-kilometre East African Oil Pipeline, linking Ugandan oilfields to Tanzania's seaport of Tanga.

The pipeline deal is crucial for Uganda, which has been seeking to evacuate its estimated six billion barrels of oil reserves discovered in 2006.

Kenya's bid to have the pipeline routed through Lamu suffered a setback in March 2016, when Tanzania and Uganda jointly announced plans to fund the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) through Bukoba.
