Joseph Wamukoya, the former Member of Parliament for Matungu, has passed away at the age of 79. He was a dedicated public servant who left an indelible mark on the lives of the people of Matungu.
Wamukoya served in the 8th Parliament, representing the Matungu Constituency from 1997 to 2002. He was the first MP to hold this position and was elected on the KANU ticket.
During his tenure, Wamukoya was appointed as the Assistant Minister in the Ministry of Lands and Settlement by the late President Daniel Moi. He was a key figure in the development of the region and worked tirelessly to uplift the lives of the people.
Although Wamukoya lost his seat in the 2002 and 2007 elections, he remained committed to public service and ventured into private business. His legacy continues to inspire and motivate the people of Matungu.
Leaders from across the country have taken to social media to mourn the passing of Wamukoya, including ODM leader Raila Odinga and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya.
"This was a very close friend who was deeply committed to our country and to his people of Matungu. He left an indelible mark as director of Veterinary Services in Kenya. My thoughts are with his family and the people of Matungu," said Raila Odinga.
"Hon Dr Joseph Wamukoya was an industrious and development-minded leader who served in the 8th Parliament as the first MP for Matungu Constituency. His death has robbed us a leader whose focus was on development, peace, and uplifting the lives of mwananchi," said Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya.
