On the evening of May 3, 2021, a devastating subway overpass collapse in Mexico City left a trail of destruction and loss of life.
According to local government officials, at least 15 people were killed and 70 injured when a portion of the elevated overpass carrying a subway train on Mexico City's newest Line 12, also known as the Golden Line, collapsed at 10:25 p.m. local time.
Interior Minister Alfonso Suarez Del Real confirmed the incident, which occurred on a section of the rapid transit system that was still under construction.
Footage from CCTV surveillance cameras captured the moment of the collapse, showing the overpass giving way directly above a street with moving cars, sending a cloud of dust and debris into the air.
As rescue efforts got underway, Mexico City's Mayor Claudia Sheinbaum arrived at the scene, assuring the public that firefighters and public safety personnel were working to respond to the disaster.
“Firefighters, public safety personnel are working. Various hospitals are serving. We will give more information shortly,” she said on her official Twitter account.
