The Tanzanian government has taken a significant step in its fight against COVID-19 by reinstating a 14-day quarantine period for all international travellers, including returning residents.

According to a directive signed by the Permanent Secretary for Health, Prof Abel Makubi, the measure aims to elevate and enhance prevailing preventive measures, particularly those related to international travel.

As of Tuesday, all travellers, whether foreigners or returning residents, will be required to present a negative COVID-19 test certificate upon arrival. The test will be based on Real-Time Polymerase Chain Reaction (RT-PCR) using samples collected within 72 hours before arrival.

Additionally, the directive seeks to enhance screening for all travellers entering or leaving the country. Travellers will be subjected to mandatory quarantine in designated government facilities, while residents will isolate in their homes.

The government has also extended these measures to trucks or vehicles carrying goods and services, ordering them to have a maximum of three crew members on board to facilitate smooth border crossing.
