On May 3, 2021, a devastating attack shook Lamu East, leaving two people dead and one seriously injured in a suspected al-Shabaab attack.
The incident occurred when a vehicle carrying the victims ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) planted at the outskirts of Ishakani village, approximately 15 kilometers from Salama Camp.
The attack took place at border point 27, with reports suggesting it was targeting the border wall being constructed at the Kenya-Somalia security border.
Confirming the incident, County Commissioner Irungu Macharia stated that a multi-agency team was on the ground pursuing the suspected militants.
Notably, this was not the first time the area had been targeted by militants. In March 2021, a water bowser ferrying water to the construction site of the Kenya-Somalia security border wall was ambushed, resulting in the death of one person.
According to Macharia, the bowser, with a driver and his assistant on board, ran over an IED believed to have been planted in its way by the militants before exploding at around 7:30 am in Lamu county.
