On May 3, 2021, a devastating attack shook Lamu East, leaving two people dead and one seriously injured in a suspected Al-Shabaab attack.
The vehicle carrying the victims ran over an improvised explosive device (IED) planted at the outskirts of Ishakani village, approximately 15 kilometers from Salama Camp.
Confirming County Commissioner Irungu Macharia stated that a multi-agency team was deployed to pursue the suspected militants.
Notably, this was not the first attack on the Kenya-Somalia security border wall construction site. In March 2021, militants ambushed a water bowser, killing one person.
Commissioner Macharia assured that troops had been adequately deployed to hunt down the militants and that a team of security officers was mobilized to ensure the safety of construction workers and staff at the site.
Despite the attack, the government official reiterated that construction works at the border wall had not been hampered and that the scene of the attack was far away from the camp.
