As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect families worldwide, a glimmer of hope has emerged in Mombasa, where an NGO is providing essential support to needy Muslim households during the holy month of Ramadan.

Founded in 2019 by Dr. Ijaaba Ahmed, Joined As One Relief (Jaorelief) has been making a significant impact in the community, particularly during the Ramadan period. In 2020, the organization launched its first Ramadan project, coinciding with the first Ramadan celebrated after the COVID-19 pandemic hit the country.

According to Abdirahman Farah, Operations Procurement Manager at Jaorelief, the organization aims to feed at least 250 needy Muslim families across the country during this holy month. 'Last year we were able to feed around 210 families, giving 30 packages each to two orphanages,' Abdirahman said, highlighting the organization's commitment to reaching as many people as possible.

Jaorelief works closely with mosques, Imams, and Madrassa managers to identify families in need of assistance. The organization also relies on donations from well-wishers, including a patron program that enables individuals to contribute monthly to support the feeding program.

Each package, which costs approximately KES 10,000, contains essential food items such as maize flour, wheat flour, rice, sugar, dates, cooking oil, salt, and beans, sufficient to feed a family of five or six for about a month.
