Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai has come under fire from Kenyans for his slow response to an incident where six police officers were caught on CCTV breaking into a bar in Nairobi's Kayole area.

The incident occurred in March when the officers, dressed in regular and administration police uniforms, broke into the Mossy Tavern Bar and Restaurant in Soweto, Kayole, and made away with cash and carted away crates of alcohol.

According to the bar's owner, Moses Mwangi, the officers first broke down the bar's metallic door using metal rods before proceeding to the counter to help themselves.

"I am a hardworking businessman who respects the law. I have the documents the government gave me to run my business and now they are hurting me. What does the government want me to do?" Mwangi posed.

IG Mutyambai had directed the Internal Affairs Unit to investigate the incident, but over a year later, the officers have not been arrested or charged.

"It would be premature to speak about it before a conclusive report is submitted and the complainant briefed on the same. Should the officers be found culpable then action will be taken," Mutyambai said in a statement.

However, Kenyans on social media have accused the IG of dragging his feet in dealing with the errant officers despite the existence of CCTV footage that captured them looting.
