On May 3, 2021, Makongeni residents stormed the Kenya Railways Staff Retirement Benefits Scheme offices in protest over the installation of a new security firm, Matu Security Company, to man the Railways Houses.

The residents, who have been providing security to the houses since 2002, claimed that the new security firm would render them jobless and threatened to take action if their security jobs were taken away.

Area leaders, including Makadara Member of Parliament George Aladwa and Makongeni MCA Peter Anyule Imwatok, intervened and resolved the matter, including alleged eviction threats by Kenya Railways.

According to Aladwa, the youths would continue providing security, and all eviction letters had been cancelled. Imwatok added that they had a fruitful meeting with the CEO and agreed to follow up on the issues on Friday.
