On Sunday morning, a devastating boat accident occurred off the coast of San Diego, resulting in the loss of at least two lives and leaving 23 others hospitalized.

According to the San Diego Fire Department, 25 people were rescued from the water, with two succumbing to their injuries at the scene and the remaining 23 being taken to hospitals for treatment.

The accident was first reported around 10:30 local time near Point Loma, a peninsular outcropping near the entrance to the San Diego Bay, with later reports pinpointing the location near the Cabrillo National Monument at the peninsula's southern tip.

As the rescue efforts were underway, it remained unclear where the boat had originated from or what its intended destination was.

A multi-agency response, involving San Diego firefighters, San Diego lifeguards, and federal agencies such as U.S. Customs and Border Protection and the U.S. Coast Guard, was instrumental in the rescue operation.
