On April 29, 2021, police in Kisumu made a significant bust, intercepting a large quantity of bhang worth KSh.1.5 million that was being smuggled into the city disguised as omena.
The bhang, packed in 15 sacks, was cleverly hidden between 30 bags of omena inside a lorry. The driver and his companion were arrested after the police stopped the vehicle past curfew hours.
According to Kisumu Central OCPD James Ngetich, the officers from the night patrol had reason to suspect the lorry and ordered the driver to Kondele police station for questioning.
At the station, the driver's companion fled, raising further suspicions. The officers then arrested the driver and searched the lorry, confirming that it was indeed carrying 30 bags of omena and 15 bags of bhang.
It is alleged that the bhang was being transported to Mamboleo Estate. Investigations have commenced to establish the source and recipient of the bhang.
