On April 19, 2021, Taita Taveta Governor Granton Samboja sent a memo to the county executives committee members, ordering them to surrender their official vehicles and hand over the keys to him. The memo, signed by County Secretary Liverson Mghendi, cited the upsurge of Covid-19 cases in the county as the reason for the decision.

The county executives are worried that the governor is planning a major overhaul of his administration to weed out non-performing officials. The governor also ordered the CECs' drivers to apply for their annual leave, stating that the directive would remain in force until advised otherwise.

Granton Samboja has been in the news recently, having been cleared by the High Court to vie for the governor's seat. He also scored a first when the Jumuiya ya Kaunti za Pwani (JKP) appointed him as the Coastal regional bloc chairman.

The CECs affected by the governor's decision are Esther Mwanyumba, Gasper Mshighat, Davis Mwangoma, Vumi Ringo, Julius Mghanga, Andrew Mlawasi, John Mwakima, Liverson Mghendi, Dephence Mwandoe, Laban Mwashigadi, and Daniel Makoko.
