On August 25, 2020, a Greek court handed down a suspended prison sentence to Manchester United captain Harry Maguire, who was found guilty of assault charges.

Maguire, the England international defender, was arrested on August 21, 2020, after a fight at a nightclub in Mykonos, Greece.

He was charged with assault, bodily harm, verbal abuse, and attempted bribery, but denied all charges and stated his intention to appeal the verdict.

“Following the hearing today, I have instructed my legal team with immediate effect to inform the courts we will be appealing. I remain strong and confident regarding our innocence in this matter – if anything myself, family and friends are the victims,” Maguire said in a statement.

Manchester United released a statement backing their player, saying: “Harry Maguire pleaded not guilty to all of the misdemeanour charges made against him and he continues to strongly assert his innocence.”

The sentence is suspended for three years, and according to reports, the fight started when someone hurt Maguire’s sister.
