On August 24, 2020, a shocking video surfaced on social media, revealing Uganda's ambassador to Denmark, Nimisha Madhvani, and her deputy, Elly Kamahungye, allegedly plotting to steal COVID-19 funds meant for stranded citizens.
According to the video, the ambassador and her deputy were heard devising a plan to share out the funds as an allowance over eight days for the diplomats, instead of registering it for COVID-19 use.
“Give yourselves $4,000… deputy ambassador Elly Kamahungye is heard to say, admitting there would be “jumbled accounts” while recalling how diplomats were able to bribe auditors to shelve a previous probe into embassy accounts.
Nimisha herself suggests that staff members “find a way” to use the money.
Uganda's foreign ministry has pledged a full investigation into the allegations, with the officers implicated being recalled to the ministry headquarters to pave way for the investigations.
