As the country continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, Education Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has hinted that school reopening dates might be pushed closer than initially projected January 2021.

Speaking in Migori County, where he toured institutions to assess their preparedness, Prof. Magoha noted that the declining cases of COVID-19 in the country over the past week have raised hopes of an earlier reopening.

"You're aware the virus is starting to look like it is going to stagnate…we're saying should the situation change, we shall be ready and willing to look at the scenario once again in the interest of our children," Prof. Magoha said.

The CS emphasized that the government's primary concern is the safety of children when they return to school, and that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure their well-being, including providing water sources, sanitizers, and masks where possible.

Migori Governor Okoth Obado also urged the government to improve infrastructure in schools to ensure learners' safety upon resumption, while also advising parents to take good care of their children during the prolonged stay at home to prevent cases of early pregnancy.

Prof. Magoha's remarks come as the country continues to navigate the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, with the government remaining committed to reopening schools as soon as it is safe to do so.
